An AI advisory firm called Codestrap got some attention last month for a blunt prediction: businesses are faking AI integration, and a reckoning is coming.
Their example was a technical one — AI-generated code that passed all its tests but performed 2,000 times worse than the original and was nearly four times larger. Looked great on the metrics. Was a disaster in practice. Nobody caught it because nobody looked past the surface.
The story spread through enterprise tech circles, but the version that keeps showing up in small business forums is quieter and more personal.
What if I'm doing this to myself?
Not the enterprise version — not code failures or board meetings. The everyday version. The proposal that used AI-drafted language your prospect has definitely seen before. The customer service response that answers the question but sounds like it was written by someone who has never met a human. The Instagram caption that's technically fine but has no discernible personality. The newsletter that arrived and said nothing.
You're using the tools. You're producing more. But you haven't stopped to ask: is what's coming out of this actually good?
The Thing Nobody Checks
Here's the uncomfortable part of working with AI: it removes the friction that used to force quality control.
Before AI, writing a proposal took two hours. You reread it twice. You changed the opener because it sounded flat. You caught the weird phrasing in paragraph three. Not because you were being methodical — because you'd just spent two hours on it and your brain was already in revision mode.
Now you generate a draft in 90 seconds. It looks polished. The grammar is correct. The structure makes sense. And you send it.
The review step didn't disappear. It just got skipped, because the draft looks done.
This is the faking-it problem for small businesses. Not fraud. Not incompetence. Just the natural consequence of outputs that look finished without being particularly good.
What "Mediocre AI Output" Actually Looks Like
It's worth being specific, because this is easy to deny in the abstract.
In proposals and client work: Generic problem statements that could apply to anyone. Benefits that sound like they were pulled from a template — because they were. Missing specificity about the client's actual situation. Professional-sounding but not personal.
In customer communications: Responses that answer the literal question but miss the emotional subtext. "I understand you're frustrated" as an opener for a message that then doesn't acknowledge what the frustration was actually about. Technically complete, humanly absent.
In content and marketing: Blog posts that are comprehensive but say nothing you couldn't find on the first page of Google. Social captions that use the right hashtags but have no point of view. Newsletters that reliably arrive and are reliably skippable.
In internal documents: Memos that look thorough but contain recommendations the AI generated from general training data rather than your actual business context. Decisions that got made based on those recommendations.
None of this is catastrophic on its own. One mediocre proposal doesn't end a business. But patterns do.
The Three Questions to Actually Ask
Before you send anything AI-assisted, there are three questions that cut through the noise:
1. Would someone who knows my business recognize this as mine?
Not "does this sound professional." Your brand isn't professionalism — professionalism is a baseline. The question is whether this sounds like you. Your business. Your specific take on your specific thing. If a competitor could send the same document with their name swapped in, it's not differentiated enough.
2. Does this solve the actual problem, or just the stated one?
The stated problem is what someone asks. The actual problem is what they need. A customer asking "when will my order arrive" might really be asking "I bought this for a birthday and I'm panicking." An AI handles the stated question. Only you can handle the actual one. Did this response do both?
3. Would I be proud of this if it went public?
Not "is it acceptable." Pride. Would you screenshot this customer interaction as an example of how your business handles things? Would you show the proposal to a mentor? If the honest answer is "it's fine," that's usually not fine enough.
A Practical Audit (15 Minutes, Once a Week)
Pull five pieces of AI-assisted output from the past week. Could be emails, proposals, social posts, anything you published or sent.
Read each one as if you were the recipient.
Mark anything that:
- Could have come from any business in your category
- Misses something the recipient actually cares about
- You'd wince at if a prospect saw it side-by-side with a competitor's work
- Sounds like a template more than a person
Don't do this to punish yourself. Do it to calibrate. The goal is knowing where you're adding enough human judgment and where you're letting the model do more work than it's capable of.
Most people who do this find two or three consistent gaps. Same type of output, same type of shortcut, same type of miss. Once you know what yours are, they're fixable.
The Actual Goal
Less AI isn't the answer. More honest AI is.
The firms getting real value from AI — the 20% in the PwC study who capture most of the benefit — aren't using less of it. They've just stopped treating the first output as the final output. There's a human review pass. There's a question of "does this actually do the thing." There's ownership of what goes out under their name.
The Codestrap reckoning isn't coming for you because you used AI. It's coming for the businesses that confused the appearance of productivity with actual quality.
The answer is simple, if not easy: use the tools, then be honest about what they produced. Fix what needs fixing. Send what deserves to be sent.
