I see it everywhere. LinkedIn posts about "crafting your AI strategy." Consultants selling "AI roadmaps." Conference panels about "digital transformation through artificial intelligence."
Here's what nobody at those conferences will tell you: you don't need an AI strategy.
You need a business strategy. And sometimes - not always - AI is the best tool to execute it.
The Strategy Trap
Here's how most small businesses get sucked in:
- They read that AI is "transforming everything"
- They feel behind
- They hire a consultant or buy a course
- The consultant says "first, let's develop your AI strategy"
- Three months and $5,000 later, they have a PDF they never open and two tool subscriptions they never use
I know because I did this. I learned this the expensive way so you don't have to.
What to Do Instead
Forget the word "AI" for a minute. Answer these three questions:
1. What takes too much of my time? Not in theory. Actually look at your last week. Where did the hours go? Email? Social media? Invoicing? Scheduling?
2. What would I do with 5 extra hours a week? Grow sales? Actually take a day off? Spend time on the part of my business I love instead of the part I have to do?
3. Is there a tool that can handle #1 so I get #2?
That's it. If the answer to #3 happens to involve AI, great. If it's just better software, or a part-time employee, or a better process - also great.
The point was never AI. The point was the 5 hours.
Real Example: My Retail Shop
My problem wasn't "I need AI." My problem was: I spend 3 hours every Monday creating social media content for the week, and I hate it.
The solution: ChatGPT + Canva. I use ChatGPT to generate the captions and ideas, Canva to create the graphics, and Buffer to schedule everything.
Total time now: 45 minutes.
That's not an "AI strategy." That's solving a problem. The fact that two of the three tools use AI is irrelevant. What matters is I got 2 hours and 15 minutes back every Monday.
Your Competition Isn't Sleeping On This
The businesses pulling ahead right now aren't the ones with the best "AI strategy." They're the ones who identified their biggest time wasters and found tools to fix them.
Some of those tools use AI. Some don't. Nobody cares which. They care about results.
Stop overthinking this. Pick your biggest headache. Search for a solution. Try it for a week. Keep it or kill it.
That's your entire strategy. No PDF required.
