I need to tell you something, and I'm not going to sugarcoat it.
That competitor of yours - the one who seems to be everywhere on social media, responds to reviews within hours, sends out a beautiful newsletter every week, and somehow still has time to run their actual business?
They're using AI. And it's not complicated.
The Typical Small Business AI Stack (What They're Actually Doing)
Based on conversations with dozens of business owners, here's what the "AI-powered" competitor is actually doing:
Monday Morning (30 minutes)
They open ChatGPT and type something like: "Write me 5 social media posts for my [business] this week."
They spend 15 minutes tweaking the posts to sound like them. Then they drop them into Buffer or Later and schedule them for the week.
Social media: handled.
Throughout the Week (5 minutes per day)
When they get a Google review, they paste it into ChatGPT: "Write a response to this review for my business."
They edit it slightly. Post it. Move on.
When they need to send a tricky email - a follow-up, an apology, a price increase notice - they draft it in ChatGPT first, then personalize it.
Customer communication: faster.
Friday Afternoon (20 minutes)
They use Canva Magic Studio to create next week's graphics. They pick a template, swap in their content, and auto-resize for every platform.
Marketing visuals: done.
Monthly (1 hour)
They use ChatGPT to brainstorm their newsletter content, write the draft, and refine it. They send it through Mailchimp or Beehiiv.
Newsletter: consistent.
The Math
- ChatGPT: Free (or $20/month for Plus)
- Canva: $13/month
- Buffer: $6/month per channel
- Mailchimp: Free up to 500 subscribers
Total: $0-50/month and about 2 hours per week.
That's it. That's the secret. They're not using some enterprise AI platform. They're not paying a consultant $5,000 for a strategy deck. They're using the same tools available to everyone, and they're spending 2 hours a week on something that would have taken 8-10 hours before.
What This Means for You
Here's what I don't want you to do: panic. You don't need to match them overnight.
Here's what I do want you to do: start.
Not tomorrow. Not "when things slow down." Today.
Pick the thing that bugs you most - the social media you're not posting, the reviews you're not responding to, the newsletter you keep meaning to start - and spend 30 minutes with ChatGPT making it happen.
Your competition isn't sleeping on this. Neither should you.
But you also don't need to sprint. A steady walk in the right direction beats standing still every time.
The 30-Day Catch-Up Plan
Week 1: Sign up for ChatGPT. Use it for one thing daily - emails, social posts, review responses. Week 2: Add Canva. Create your first batch of social media graphics. Week 3: Set up Buffer. Schedule a week of posts in advance for the first time. Week 4: Send your first newsletter. It doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to exist.
By the end of the month, you're doing everything your competitor is doing. For $50/month and 2 hours a week.
That's not an "AI strategy." That's just working smarter.
And your competitor? They're probably reading this too. So maybe start today.
